Metro agreement
Hangzhou's Metro operator this week signed an agreement with the Shanghai Railway Bureau, under which the bureau will provide equipment maintenance, technical support on safety and operations, and staff training.
The Shanghai bureau will also provide maintenance services for Metro Line 1 in the future.
Meanwhile, seven spaniels were recently tested as sniffer dogs at West Xiasha Station at Metro Line 1.
Gentle and well-behaved, the spaniels became excited when they sniffed out something and displayed their talent for tracking and distinguishing different smells.
Spaniels love working and are especially good at finding explosives and blood, said Chen Weilie, a senior police officer at special police team of Hangzhou Public Security Bureau.
The Hangzhou Metro operator also plans to use German shepherds when the subway opens in October.
Tree protection
Large trees around tea gardens in Hangzhou have been numbered and photographed as part of a campaign to preserve them from damage by tea planters.
Planters found guilty of damaging the trees in any way will be fined, and those who cause trees to die will be severely punished, said Bao Tinghua, deputy director of the Hangzhou Gardening and Cultural Relics Administration Bureau.
Some tea planters have been caught felling the trees, or trying to kill them with pesticides or through removing bark in order to clear ground for more tea planting.
Hangzhou is famous for its Longjing tea, one of the most famous varieties in China.
Hangzhou tea planters harvest about 7,500 kilograms of tea from 20 hectares every year, generating about 45 million yuan (US$6 million) in revenue.
The bureau has also set up GPS and surveillance cameras at key protection areas in order to identify and track down anyone damaging the city's trees.
French jazz gig
Renowned French jazz band Enzo Enzo are playing at JZ Bar in Hangzhou tonight as part of their tour of China.
The ensemble is led by female jazz singer Korin Ternovtzeff, who in 1982 released her first single, "Je Veux Jouer 脿 Tout."
In the space of just three albums, Ternovtzeff made her mark on the French music scene, establishing herself as one of the most interesting figures on the circuit.
Enzo Enzo's tour of China is supported by the Alliance de Francaise in China, and also includes performances by the band in Shanghai, Qingdao, Wuhan and Beijing.
Other band members of Enzo Enzo include pianist Angelo Zurzolo and double bass player Philippe Brassoud.
Lacquerware find
A folding lacquerware screen featuring "Ten Views of West Lake" has been found in a national museum in Havana, Cuba.
The artwork was discovered in the National Museum of Decoration Arts.
The back of the screen dates the piece to 1689 and identifies it as being a 50th birthday gift for the mother of a man surnamed Li.
It was crafted during the reign of Emperor Kangxi (1654-1722). The screen depicts the names and views of 10 classical views of West Lake. Six of the names, including Lotus in the Breeze at Crooked Courtyard and Autumn Moon over the Calm Lake are still used today.
The advisor said the other four names are slightly different from today's usage. This was probably to avoid any unlucky wording on a gift for an auspicious occasion.
The screen is in perfect condition.
"Ten Views of West Lake" became famous during the Song Dynasty (960-1279). Emperor Kangxi wrote the names of the 10 views and had them carved on stones when he visited Hangzhou in 1699.
Packaging pledge
Hangzhou is aiming to wrap up the title of a top international center of packaging, industry figures have said.
Set up by the country's five leading packaging companies, the center will be built into a base of packaging design, training, exhibition and R&D.
In addition, it will develop as a hub of world packaging companies headquarters.
"Over-packaging has been the biggest problem for Chinese companies," said Yu Jianhu, president of Salfo, China's paper giant and one of the five investors.
"In contrast, Japanese packaging is simple but delicate, sometimes attracting more attention than the product itself," said Yu. "We are offering a free platform with vast resources for packaging companies at home and abroad."
Zhejiang Province is home to more than 10,000 packaging companies with an annual output worth more than 100 billion yuan.
