Canal fest crowds
THE four-day Grand Canal Carnival closed last Tuesday after a total attendance of nearly 900,000 people.
Its main venue, the area around Gongchen Bridge, Grand Canal Culture Square and Dadou Road, sold 779,000 tickets. Two other venues in Tangxi Old Town and West Lake Culture Square sold 63,000 and 57,000 tickets, respectively.
“The carnival drew people with things to see, to taste and to buy. Everyone could find something they like,” said Wang Weichu of the Hangzhou Association for Brand Promotion.
Participants were encouraged to wear traditional costumes and play a role at the carnival, such as a vendor or a tailor, he said.
The carnival opened with a parade of decorated boats representing 18 cities along the Grand Canal, which joined the UNESCO List of World Cultural Heritage in June this year.
