Canal protection
THOSE who destroy or pollute Hangzhou’s Grand Canal heritage site will face a fine up to 100,000 yuan (US$15,083), according to a new draft regulation.
The draft was approved last week at the 66th meeting of the Standing Committee of the Hangzhou Municipal Government. The regulation details a series of prohibited behaviors, related penalties and pollution control measures.
According to the regulation, a fine between 200 yuan and 1,000 yuan will be levied on any behavior that damages boundary stones and markers at the Grand Canal heritage site.
Fines could reach as much as 100,000 yuan for those pouring polluted water into the canal. The same goes for people washing cars or cleaning mops in the canal’s vicinity.
These measures apply to facilities along the canal as well. Unauthorized destruction, movement or removal of historic relics including water gates, dams, piers, bridges, ancient structures, and stone carvings with cultural, artistic or scientific values is prohibited.
