Car joint venture
YULONG Motor Corporation from Chinese Taiwan signed a joint venture agreement with Chinese mainland auto maker, Dongfeng Motor Group, on Tuesday to build a factory in Hangzhou.
This will be Dongfeng's sixth joint venture after its successful partnerships with Honda, KIA, Nissan and PSA Peugeot Citroen.
Dongfeng and Yulong will each own a 50 percent stake in the 3.4 billion yuan (US$510.83 million) joint venture, Dongfeng-Luxgen Auto Co, which has a factory capable of producing 240,000 cars a year and a research and development center. The first Luxgen brand SUV and MPV will reach the market next year.
According to the plan, Dongfeng-Luxgen will produce eight car models in the next few years, including electric cars.
Expo returns
The 2nd World Leisure Exposition and the 13th West Lake Expo will be held together from September 17 to November 18, 2011, and the opening ceremony will take place at Xianghu Lake in Xiaoshan District.
The 2nd Leisure Expo will be themed as "Leisure - Improve the Life Quality," aiming to expand the influence of the Leisure Expo and improve the communication between cities all over the world.
Planned crossings
Hangzhou residents will get easier access across the Qiantang River when two new bridges and a road tunnel are built in the next five years.
Zhijiang Bridge and Jiubao Bridge will be put into operation by the end of next year, and Wangjiang Road Tunnel will be built during the city's 12th Five-Year Plan period of 2011-2015.
In addition, Qingchun Road Tunnel, the best route from downtown to the airport, will open to traffic this month. The city will have a total of eight bridges and tunnels across the Qiantang River by the end of 2015.
Flowers for free
More than 100,000 pots of chrysanthemum flowers will be given away for free by the organizers of the Hangzhou chrysanthemum exhibition.
The flowers were given away from Wednesday at the South Gate of Hangzhou Botanical Garden, organizers said.
The Hangzhou chrysanthemum exhibition started in October but was extended into December because of the mild weather. Originally, the exhibit was scheduled to end on November 30, but ended on Monday.
Student grants
Twenty-seven foreign students studying at local universities received scholarships from Hangzhou government.
They are the first group of foreign students to get government grants which are designed to encourage outstanding foreign students to pursue academic degrees in Hangzhou's universities.
The 27 students are from Thailand, South Korea, France, Australia and Turkmenistan. The scholarship was set up by Hangzhou government in June.
"We hope these excellent students will enjoy their studies in Hangzhou and start their careers in this scenic city in the future," Vice Mayor Chen Xiaoping said.
Fire-fighting robot
A huge "fire-fighting transformer" was completed in Wushan Square on Tuesday and will be displayed to the public from today.
The 12-meter-tall "transformer" called "Xiaoxiao" is recycled from two out-of-service fire engines. The chest is a truck head, the legs are bumpers and the feet are wheels.
Artist Zhou Feng was in charge of the transforming project. It took him and his two friends more than three months to complete the job.
In the future, Xiaoxiao will settle near the Hangzhou Fire-fighting Theme Park as a landmark of Hangzhou Xiasha Economic Development Zone.
Winter warmers
As temperatures dropped to nearly zero degree Celsius this week, Hangzhou Zoo acted promptly to shelter tropical animals from the winter chill.
The Burmese python, one of the six largest snake species in the world, coiled up in its cage basking in the glow of two 100-watt lightbulbs. Its mattress also has heating facilities underneath.
Zoo workers have installed bathroom heaters and air-conditioners in the cages of tropical amphibians to prevent them from hibernation which could lead to deadly diseases.
African zebras and giraffes are living in comfortable houses that look like a villa. The floor is covered with thick hay and there are also electric heaters.
