Car plate odds dip

THE chance of winning a Hangzhou car plate through the government lottery dropped from 2.2 percent in May to 1.9 percent this month.

As of the deadline for submitting applications, 328,967 people had signed up for this month’s license plate lottery, 86,661 more than in May when the first lottery was held.

Only 5,333 car plates are to be issued through the lottery, the same as last month. Another 1,758 plates, 425 more than in May, will be auctioned off. The total quota for plates this month is 7,091.

The Hangzhou government announced new rules for car plates on March 26, requiring car owners win a plate either through auction or lottery.

At that time, officials estimated the odds of winning a plate would be around 20 percent.

The new rules triggered an unanticipated rush for car plates. More than 238,600 people signed up for last month’s lottery and auction. The average bidding price was 19,608 yuan (US$3,112).
