Care home checklist
The Hangzhou government will rate the city’s 200 or so nursing homes as a way to encourage them improve services and transparency.
According to the city’s new regulations, all nursing homes must have fire equipment, a security system, a business license and a medical certificate. A standard nursing home should have at least 50 beds and employ medical workers — including psychiatrists.
The first group of nursing homes for rating was told to submit their details before June 15. A jury of 50 experts from civil affairs, health, finance and fire departments and from universities will rate these nursing homes and publish the results in September.
Nursing homes will be awarded between one and five stars, helping elderly people choose where to stay.
At the end of last year, Hangzhou had 1.43 million residents aged 60 or above, representing 20 percent of the city’s population.
