Cartoon fest ends

THE curtain fell on Tuesday on the 2011 China International Cartoon & Animation Festival, which saw a record number of transactions and visitors.

More than 2 million people visited the festival which included exhibitions, forums, contests and interactive activities. Participating companies clinched business contracts totaling 12.8 billion yuan (US$1.9 billion), up 20 percent from last year.

More than 50 TV stations, distributors and mobile media companies from home and abroad bought animated cartoons totaling 145,000 minutes, 42 percent for overseas distributors.

All 222 cartoon works for auction during the festival have been sold, fetching a total of 11.8 million yuan in the first cartoon auction held in China.

Wu Shanming's ink-wash painting for the film "Love for Nation" was sold at 500,000 yuan, the highest price in the auction. The film won the Best Short Film award at the Montreal Cartoon and Animation Festival in 1990.

Tree-planting drive

Volunteers and villagers in Minqin County in northwestern Gansu Province have planted more than 15,000 trees so far this year with the help of donations from Hangzhou residents.

Three Hangzhou residents visited the Guodong ecological forest project in Minqin County to check the progress of donated trees recently.

The donation campaign initiated by Hangzhou Daily calls on local residents to make contributions to the tree-planting project in Minqin County which is battling encroaching desert - one of the sources of sand thunderstorms in China.

Hangzhou residents of all ages, including those living abroad, donated 117,000 yuan within 20 days. Planting a tree in Minqin costs as little as 10 yuan. The tree-planting campaign will be held in spring every year.

Drunk-driving cases

Zhejiang Province caught 64 drivers driving under the influence of alcohol on Sunday and Monday, including 11 people driving while drunk.

Since May 1, the modified traffic law makes drunk driving a criminal offense for the first time and violators can be jailed for up to six months.

The Traffic Administration Bureau of Zhejiang Province said that the first drunk-driving case occurred in Hangzhou, and two accidents resulted from drunk-driving also happened in Ningbo and Wenzhou.

Hiking trail opens

A 108-kilometer hiking route in Xishan Forest Park west of Hangzhou opened to the public during the May Day holiday.

The route winds its way from the north to the south through the 1,381-hectare Xishan Forest Park between the West Lake and Xixi Wetland.

More than 96.7 percent of the hiking area is covered with woods with an annual average temperature of about 16.2 degrees Celsius and humidity at around 80 percent.

Xihu District proposed the hiking route at the end of 2007. It is now twice the length of the hiking route in the famous Yellow Mountain in neighboring Anhui Province.

The route connects the Lingyin Temple, Jinlian Temple, the only waterfall in Hangzhou - the White Dragon Waterfall, the highest peak - Ruyijian, and the only geological cave in the city - Lingshan Cave.

Talent wanted

Hangzhou's Jianggan District plans to attract 100 skilled professionals from home and abroad and offer them business startup funds of up to 5 million yuan each over the next five years.

Professionals in IT, environmental protection, biomedicine, new energy, new materials and creative industries are most welcome and eligible for loans, financial support, housing subsidy and other services provided by the district government.

Jianggan offers a one-stop service for invited professionals in project application, business consulting, taxation, environment assessment, legal affairs, driving license application, residence registration, and finding schools for their children.

Jianggan will create an industrial park with a planned area of 40,000 square meters for these skilled entrepreneurs and will invite business experts and successful entrepreneurs to give them useful guidance.
