Cashing in on euro
A EURO exhibition was held last week in Hangzhou by a delegation from the European Union, as part of an exhibition tour in China.
Videos and photographs telling the story of the euro from its birth, through its styles, to its function in trade and its relations with China, formed part of the exhibition,
A lecture about the euro's history, challenges and prospects, was given by Annika Melander, first counselor and head of Economic and Financial Affairs Section of delegation of the European Union.
"The euro is so much more than a currency," Melander told Shanghai Daily. "On one hand, it makes the economy function better, and on the other, it is a political symbol across Europe. It helps keep the identity of the EU - one of powerful unity."
The European debt crisis, despite being a difficult time for Europe, is seen an opportunity, for attracting tourists because of lower exchange rate, and "to building a better future, in terms of promoting world trade, and links with China," said Mary McCarthy, economic adviser to the European Commission.
"Now we are ensuring European countries positioning themselves for solid growth in the future and to be prepared when there is resumption of dynamic trade," she added.
The EU delegation has been showing the exhibition in many cities in China, including Chengdu in Sichuan Province, Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai and Nanjing in Jiangsu Province.
