Charging poles

Hangzhou plans to set up an additional 3,500 charging poles to make it convenient for new-energy vehicle drivers. On completion, the total number of charging poles in the city will reach 4,000. The city, which has spearheaded the campaign for new-energy automobiles, has only 500 charging poles at the moment.

In October, the 82 charging poles at 19 stations provided only 3,933 kilowatt hours of electricity, which means each charging pole delivers 1.6 kilowatt hours a day. The poor usage of the charging poles is due to high electricity charge, high parking fees and scarce charging poles, Li Yuefeng, general manager of Hangzhou Yuexing New Energy Automobile Service Co, said.

Most of the poles take about six hours to fully charge a car, thus the electric charge is about 10.8 yuan. The parking fee is about 40 yuan, thus the total cost works out around 50.8 yuan each time to cover a distance of around 300 kilometers.

“It’s expensive, inconvenient and not safe for me to leave my car in a parking space to charge for such a long time,” a car owner said.

Applying for a personal charging pole in the residential area is difficult due to lack of fixed parking spaces and charging facilities. It takes about 15,000 yuan to set up a personal charging pole.
