Chinese artist honored
IOC President Thomas Bach presented the Pierre de Coubertin Award to Chinese artist Han Meilin at the International Olympic Committee headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland on Tuesday.
The 82-year-old is the first Chinese artist to receive the award.
At the awarding ceremony, Han gave IOC a book of manuscripts about the Olympics as a present.
Han was the designer of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games mascot “Fuwa” and joined the torch rally prior to the Beijing Olympic Games at the age of 72, one of the oldest runners of the time. Bach accompanied Han to take a tour of the Olympic Museum.
Han has a private art gallery in Hangzhou Botanic Garden, exhibiting more than 1,000 pieces of his artworks.
