Citizen photo contestant focuses on foreigners’ faces

THE Hangzhou Citizen Photography Festival collects works of hundreds of citizens who portray the city from different angles, and Li Er, one of them, focuses his lens on foreign faces.

Li’s series “Foreigners around West Lake” contains photos of foreign tourists, some of them dressed uniquely, some acting boldly, and some showing  strong interest in scenery.

“Happiness has no boundaries, and I want to share their happiness to people who take a look at my photos,” said Li, a local who works as a public servant.

He tours and take photos at West Lake one hour every day, mostly around the Broken Bridge.

“The bridge is a stage that carries many kinds of stories, and I prefer to record those happy stories, so as to convey hope and beauty to others,” he said.

Li used to be a film critic who has written several books about film. He turned to photography in 2008 because he found that taking photos of his hometown was an interesting and intriguing job.

He likes to take photos of foreigners because “they have more vivid facial expression and like to pose for the camera.” But he says he’ll readily give up shooting if a potential subject says “no.”

Li has participated in the festival several times but this is the first time his series is set as a subject for exhibition.

The series is exhibiting at Z Pavilion at Hangzhou Public Library (58 Jiefang Rd E.) until June 30.
