Boar killed
A wild boar was beaten to death after scaring people samba dancing and doing early morning exercises in a park beside West Lake on Monday.
"We dance here at 6am every day," an elderly man, surnamed Wang, said. "We had just started when a boar leapt into the square.
"It was knee-high, 1 meter long with brown skin. It had no tusks and looked like a big mouse."
The dancers ran and the startled animal tried to flee, bumping into several people. Hearing the commotion, three security guards, armed with a broom, a stick and an iron pipe, chased the boar.
"The boar must have been scared as it slipped twice on the wet marble paving," another elderly man, surnamed Zhao, said.
It ran into a parking lot and where it bumped into a man playing badminton, who swung his racket at the unfortunate creature. The boar fell, but managed to get up, turn and rush across Beishan Road toward Baoshi Hill, its pursuers hot on its trail.
However, as it tried to cross the road it got its head jammed in central reservation railings.
A passer-by surnamed Qian said: "I saw many people chasing the boar. After its head got stuck, it looked like it was in great pain."
Witnesses said a man grabbed the iron pipe from a guard and brought it down on the boar's head, killing it immediately.
Not a rubbish day out
Primary school students play a ring throwing game about garbage sorting at the Huajiachi Community Environment Protection Promotion Site in Hangzhou. Opened this month, this is the city's first environment promotion site, and was created on the site of a waste transfer station. It now functions both as a park and as an information center where visitors can learn more about the city's refuse sorting regime. - Xu Wenwen
