City tops in culture

Hangzhou took the top spot for culture in Zhejiang Province, according to the latest Zhejiang Cultural Development Index, the first of its kind in China.
The index showed that cultural and economic development did not go hand in hand in the province. Ideas for innovation and technological upgrades are weak among Zhejiang entrepreneurs, who put a lot of emphasis on cheap prices and have little interest in building a brand, said Hu Hongwei, executive director of Zhejiang Merchants Research Society.
Zhoushan is the runner-up on the ranking, while prosperous Wenzhou is at the bottom. This year’s index is 4.21 percentage points higher than last year, when the index was introduced.
Huzhou, Jiaxing, Lishui, Ningbo, Shaoxing, Jinhua, Quzhou and Taizhou ranked from the third to 10th on the list.
