City turns on festival event for foreign residents
MAKING dumplings, writing calligraphy, enjoying classical Chinese music performances and watching folk artists make sugar-molded dolls and straw-plaited items - it was a party for everyone in Hangzhou last Sunday.
The event, called "I'm Spending Chinese New Year in Hangzhou," was sponsored by the municipal government, and patrons enjoyed fine food, sweet music, traditional Chinese games and lucky draws.
Around 50 foreigners attended, including American, English, German, French, Indian, Japanese, Russian and Italian. Some of them showed talent on the spot.
In the dumpling making competition, some foreigners made innovative creations with noses and eyes, while others were more exotic and reflected their hometown influence.
Rajat Singh Visen from India was designated the dumpling champion. He loves dumplings and always cooks them at home when he entertains. He likes mixing Indian and Chinese food, like dumplings with curry chicken stuffing.
Hangzhou now hosts around 6,000 expats. To show its appreciation for their contribution to the city, Hangzhou government plans to make the party a regular celebration before Spring Festival every year.
