City's designs to be animation hub

HANGZHOU is planning to further consolidate its position as the center of China's animation industry by becoming the home of the biggest animation museum in China as well as the headquarters of a new animation TV channel.

The China Comic and Animation Museum will be located on an island in Baima Lake, occupying an area of about 30,000 square meters. Its appearance has yet to be finalized, but the museum will include the biggest IMAX cinema in Hangzhou, according to the published design plan.

Most collections in the museum will be original scripts and drafts by well-known cartoonists and their famous works, both foreign and domestic, including the original drafts of the famous Chinese animated feature films "Uproar in Heaven" and "Avanti."

Once construction is complete, the museum hopes to become a symbol of China's animation industry with the largest and richest collections.

On another island in Baima Lake, a museum will be built dedicated to Chu Teh-Yung, a well-known Taiwanese cartoonist, and display most of his works.

Meanwhile, the design for the second phase of the Animation Plaza was also published recently. According to the plan, the second phase will include a square and a new exhibition hall. The square will provide grand-scale activities such as cosplay show and performances with adequate audience space, while the exhibition hall of about 25,000 square meters will be a supplementary hall to the existing exhibition center of 68,000 square meters (first phase). With an entire area of more than 90,000 square meters, it will become the biggest exhibition hall dedicated to cultural innovation industry in Hangzhou.

The 7th China International Cartoon and Animation Festival will be held from April 28 to May 3 in Hangzhou World Leisure Expo Park.

Hong Kong STV is also considering to position the headquarters of its new animation channel in Hangzhou, said Zhou Jianshun, CEO of Hong Kong STV International Media Group recently.

According to Zhou, the new animation channel will be different from traditional channels of this kind. "It will not be a channel which only plays cartoons all the time," Zhou said. "There will be international animation news, commentary and features about animation culture and the industry. At present, there is not such a comprehensive animation channel in the world."

In addition to this animation channel, HK STV is also looking forward to more cooperation with Hangzhou, through movie investment and tourism estate investment.
