Exhibition in Tokyo
Qinghefang Historical Street in Hangzhou is showing off its charms at the Chinese Historical and Cultural Street Exhibition in Tokyo.
It is the only historical street from Zhejiang Province at the exhibition. The exhibit includes 30 streets from the Chinese mainland. They were selected from more than 400 old streets across the country.
Renowned for its unique Song Dynasty (960-1279) charm, the street shows Hangzhou is a city with a quality lifestyle. The Ministry of Culture and National Relics Bureau honored Qinghefang Historical Street as a Famous Historical and Cultural Street in China this year.
The exhibition is the first time to promote China's historical streets overseas.
The exhibition will end on January 13, 2012, when the exhibits will be collected and displayed at the Chinese Culture Center in Tokyo.
Bike borrowing
HANGZHOU Public Bike Company has added 20 new 24-hour service stations in the city this year.
There are now 50 24-hour service stations in Hangzhou, covering Wushan Plaza, Wulin Plaza, Qingchun Plaza, bus stations and large communities.
Hangzhou has more than 50,000 bikes and 2,050 bike stations and is home to the world's largest bike-sharing program. It was selected as one of the eight best public bike service cities in the world by UK-based broadcaster BBC in September.
An average of 220,000 bicycles are used daily with a peak of more than 320,000 for a single day. About half of the bikes are borrowed during the morning and evening rush hours.
Dog kills girl
A NETIZEN has written a manual for dealing with dog attacks after an eight-year-old girl was mauled to death at her home in Xiaoshan on Saturday.
The girl, Jiajia, was torn apart by a mongrel at noon after her parents left her alone at home in Yunfeng Village, Yiqiao Town of Xiaoshan District.
Her grandmother found her after collecting firewood on a nearby hill. Villagers later clubbed the dog to death.
"Don't run away when confronted by a dog as it will chase and catch you out of instinct," a section of the manual reads.
The manual also includes information on what to do if you sense a dog might attack and how to deal with an attacking dog.
Large dogs are prohibited from entering public areas while small dogs have to be kept on a leash when taken for walks on the street.
Violations can be reported by dialing 96310.
Monitoring the air
Five new air pollution monitoring stations have begun trial operations in Hangzhou.
The air monitoring facilities are at Chun'an, Jiande, Ling'an and Tonglu. The Hangzhou Weather Bureau set up the first such monitoring facility at Mantou Mountain at the beginning of the year.
The bureau also plans to set up three air monitoring facilities in Xiaoshan, Yuhang and Fuyang to monitor haze in Hangzhou.
Hangzhou will launch stricter air quality standards - in line with countries such as Japan and the United States.
The new standard requires the air-quality watchdog to monitor airborne PM2.5 particles.
Changsha in Hunan Province, Guangzhou in Guangdong Province, Fuzhou in Fujian Province, Lhasa in the Tibet Autonomous Region and 22 other cities were also awarded by the Central Guidance Commission for Building Spiritual Civilization of the Communist Party of China.
