Classic opera

THE famous Kunqu Opera "The Peony Pavilion" will be performed tomorrow as part of a two-week cultural exhibition of painting and calligraphy.

The opening ceremony at 7:30pm at the Hangzhou Grand Theater will feature the works of more than 40 artists, including Gu Shengyue, Song Zhongyuan, Li Zihou, Wu Shanming, Lin Binfan and Zhu Chunyang.

Famous painter Wu will paint live at the ceremony that will feature the Kunqu Opera; the work will be auctioned.

The classic opera, a tragic love story, will be staged by the Zhejiang Kunqu Opera House.

Kunqu Opera is one of the oldest traditional Chinese operas, dating back more than 600 years. UNESCO lists it as one of mankind's oral and intangible cultural heritage.

Thunder alert

The dangerous thunderstorm season has started and Hangzhou authorities are urging everyone to beware of storms and take cover.

The weather is more severe this year than in the past, according to the weather bureau. Since June 1, 51 accidents have been caused by thunderstorms in Hangzhou, three times the number in the same period last year.

Serious accidents and injuries can occur in the season that begins in early June. High winds can topple trees, overturn boats and send things flying in the air. Lightning also occurs.

Hangzhou marked the Anti-Thunder Day on Wednesday to warn people to stay indoors when storms strike.

On June 23, 2008, a boat heading to Yangmei Island sank during a storm on Thousand Islands Lake.

Three people died and four were injured in one of the worst thunderstorm accidents in Hangzhou's history.

Thunderstorms are common in summer in Zhejiang Province and other coastal areas. Statistics show that from 2004 to 2008, more than 7,000 accidents were caused by storms, more than 400 people were killed or injured and the economic loss amounted to around 340 million yuan (US$49.8 million).

Around 80 percent of all thunderstorms take place between June and August, mostly between 1pm and 5pm.

Nearly 200,000 primary and middle school students from six districts will receive free tickets for summer activities at gym and sports centers, the animation center and 142 entertainment facilities.

Tickets are distributed through schools, which should apply before June 30.

Trade up

The volume of imports and exports in May reached US$4.3 billon, an increase of 43.8 percent over the same period last year, according to the Hangzhou Statistics Bureau.

The export volume was US$2.98 billion, up 51.4 percent year-on-year.

From January to May, imports and exports were valued at US$19.46 billion. Exports totaled US$13 billion.

Hangzhou has introduced 2,107 national corporate projects, 185 more than the same period last year. Actual foreign investment was US$1.7 billion, up around 11.6 percent.

Cancer drug bust

Hangzhou police have broken up a ring selling fake cancer-treatment drugs on the Internet and arrested a Chinese-American surnamed Ding and his three accomplices, authorities announced recently.

The arrests were made last November, but only recently disclosed.

Police said the scam had netted around 30 million yuan (US$4.4 million) and called it the biggest such swindle in 60 years.

The "anti-cancer" products, counterfeits of major brand drugs, were said to have been produced in India and Peru and were shipped to purchasers in seven or eight provinces.

Police warned people to beware of such health products on the Internet.

The suspicious cancer-cure claims were first reported to police in September 2009 and after investigation police found the fraudsters' headquarters was in Hangzhou, the production was carried out in Jiangsu Province and the "medicines" were packages and sold in Shenzhen, Guangzhou Province.

The alleged ringleader Ding was born in Jiangsu Province in 1963, received a doctoral degree in China and post-doctoral degree in the US where he became a citizen, police said. He returned to China in 2006 and worked for a famous hospital as a researcher, they said.

Since 2008, Ding began producing the fake medication in Jiangsu Province with a nephew surnamed Gao and two other accomplices surnamed Hu and Du.
