Cleaner air
Hangzhou recorded 152 days of good air quality between January 1 and August 15, an increase of 19 days from the same period of last year.
The city’s PM2.5 reading averaged 56 micrograms per cubic meter in the period, down 13.8 percent from a year earlier. The reading has declined for three consecutive years.
The improvement in air quality was due to the city removing polluting vehicles from roads and more rain, according to the Hangzhou Environmental Protection Bureau.
So far this year 32,800 vehicles that failed emission standards have been banned from city roads. Last year Hangzhou scrapped 95,000 such vehicles and shut down 255 polluting factories.
An increase in precipitation also helped clear the air. In May and June, 554.3 millimeters of rain fell in the city, about 40 percent more than usual. Precipitation across the Zhejiang Province was 519.9 millimeters in the period, 20 percent more than usual.
