Cleaner driving

HANGZHOU residents can rent an electric car for less than 1,000 yuan (US$159) a month for a minimal rental period of six months under a new going-green pilot project in the city.

About 100 electric cars, each with automatic transmission, are available to be rented. The two-seat vehicles can be driven up to 100 kilometers without recharging and can be driven at a top speed of 70 kilometers an hour.

The Hangzhou government is providing subsidies of between 30 and 50 percent on the car rental cost, and full subsidies on battery and electricity costs.

The city is aiming to have 20,000 electric cars on the road in two years.

Hangzhou is one of 13 cities across the country involved in new energy car programs and one of only five cities providing subsidies for the purchases of green automobiles. The programs are aimed at breaking down public skepticism about the cost, safety and convenience of green vehicles.

There are 67 charging stations and 620 charging poles in Hangzhou. The city plans to add 25 new charging stations by year's end, according to Hangzhou Electric Car Development Co.
