Cleaning up

Zhejiang Province police detained 439 suspects in the first seven months of this year for discharging waste into rivers.

Meanwhile, 2.7 billion yuan (US$422 million) was invested across the province to treat polluted rivers and 383 kilometers of foul-smelling rivers have been cleaned up, representing 85.6 percent of this year’s target.

As of June, nearly 5,000 factories in the province have been shut down for excessive emissions and 7,872 factories have been relocated or upgraded.

Last month, the Zhejiang Office for Water Pollution Treatment joined other government departments to examine 358 water treatment projects, 81 sewage treatment facilities and 182 pig and poultry farms.

Inspectors found a factory discharging waste water into the drainage system that empties into a river. The content of chromium, copper, nickel, zinc and other heavy metals in the river was three times the national limit. The case has been handed over to public prosecutors.
