Colorful blooms to put a spring in your step
A tulip exhibition is under way at Taiziwan Park in Hangzhou, where some 50,000 of the flowers are in bud as jingzhe, one of the 24 solar terms of traditional Chinese calendar, fell yesterday.
Jingzhe in traditional Chinese culture marks the time when insects awaken. Thunderstorms are thought to wake up hibernating insects as the weather warms up.
Every year, Taiziwan Park holds a tulip exhibition after jingzhe.
The park boasts 450,000 tulips this year, including 50,000 in the first batch. These bulbs have been treated at low temperatures to encourage early flowering.
Already hundreds - in reds, oranges, pinks and purples - have bloomed.
The remaining 400,000 bulbs are set to flower between the middle of this month and mid April, said Zhang Wei, a gardening expert at the park.
In addition to tulips, the park has this year introduced 52 new species of spring blooms, including hyacinth, crocuses and hippeastrum - a large bulb from tropical regions.
Adding to the color and fragrance are classic park plants - yellow winter jasmine, pink camellia and pink and white hill cherry.
The spring blooms have been planted in displays maximizing their impact: beneath lofty trees; by the small lake in the park; criss-crossing on meadow land; along the north boundary of the park; by Nanshan Road facing the West Lake.
At the foot of a hill, a flower market sells house plants, with booths selling creative craft knickknacks alongside.
A photography competition is also under way, with members of the public invited to send photographs of the park, its flowers and stories associated with it. The first prize is 2,000 yuan (US$321)

Address: the northeast slope of Solitary Hill
Eight Diagram Field
Surrounded by mountains and pools, the field is a scenic spot as well as farmland, dotted with peach and pear trees. The 10-hectare field is octagon-shaped, divided into eight parts with a tai chi symbol in the center. Currently, the field is covered by oilseed rape flowers, creating a carpet of vibrant yellow.

Xixi Wetland
The wetland boasts 66,667 square meters of plum trees - including cinnabar, pink and red plum. At this time of year cherry and peach blossom and rape flowers create a vibrant show. Xixi Wetland also holds a flower festival every April. Later in the year, lavender is another highlight.

The temple is renowned for its daffodils and holds an annual show celebrating the yellow bloom. Some 150 pots of various shaped daffodil from the famous daffodil carving master Wu Jinhai are on display. Outside the temple are 30,000 pots of hyacinth, crocus and Barbados lily.
