Common people who are uncommonly good
WU Mujuan has worked for seven years at Gaohong nursing home in Gaohong Town, Hangzhou.
Everyday, she gets up at 3am and goes to bed at 11pm so she can have enough time to take good care of the nursing home's patients. During her free time, Wu volunteers to give free haircuts to villagers, something she's been doing for more than 40 years.
Earlier this month, this conscientious, attentive woman was named one of the "Top Ten Commoner Heroes of Hangzhou."
On the day she was given the award, Wu uncharacteristically, but deservedly, took a day off work and went to urban Hangzhou. When she returned to the nursing home at 11pm, she went right back to work as several paralyzed incontinent people had messed up their bed sheets and quilts. Wu washed their bodies, did the laundry and cleaned up the mess.
Later that night when Wu was already asleep she was woken by some coughing from next door. She immediately took medicine and water to the man. When she finally got back to sleep, two old men started quarreling from another room. Wu got up and went over to soothe them.
This is how Wu spends her life in the nursing home.
She helps wash some paralyzed patients and changes their diapers twice each day. To patients who are furious and unsocial, Wu treats them like children and tells jokes and stories to them. She follows around a man with Alzheimer's disease and cleans up after him as he has a habit of urinating or defecating anywhere he wants.
"Working in a nursing house, you need love, patience, sympathy and responsibility," says Wu, adding that it's worth it when she sees the patients smile.
"I am an old person as well, so I understand them. I'd like to work for many more years as long as my physical condition allows."
Wu is well-known among locals for her good deeds. Since the end of the 1960s, there was no barber shop in Shimen Village, her hometown. She studied haircutting techniques, not to make money, but to solve the village's problem of not having a barber.
She still gives free haircuts today. Wu even travels to other villages to give haircuts to poor or bedridden people. She figures she has given free haircuts to more than 30,000 people.
