Company fined

AN aluminum company in Lin’an was fined 400,000 yuan for discharging waste water without proper treatment, Lin’an People’s Court ruled last week.

The boss of Hangzhou Yazhong Aluminum Industry Co Ltd, surnamed Wang, was sentenced to 14 months in jail and fined 80,000 yuan. A worker surnamed Zheng who discharged the factory’s waste water, which contained chromium, into the rain drainage system was sentenced to nine months in jail and fined 40,000 yuan.

On May 10, 2014, Zheng told Wang that the factory’s waste water could not meet discharge standards and Wang told him to just release it into the wasteland in the factory. Zheng said the pipe was not long enough and Wang asked him to find a solution himself, according to the court.

Three days later, Zheng discharged untreated waste water into the drainage system which connects to a local stream. Environment supervisors soon noticed the pollution and alerted authorities. By then, Zheng had released 9.46 cubic meters of sewage tainted with chromium.
