Condoms popular

EIGHTY-FIVE percent of residents in Hangzhou use condoms as their main form of contraception, a Shangcheng District survey has found.

Only 5 percent of respondents said they took birth control pills while 10 percent used a vaginal ring for contraception, according to the survey.

People over 40 years old should be cautious when taking birth control pills as it increased the risk of cardiovascular or cerebrovascular problems, said Chen Wenzeng, who works at the Hangzhou Red Cross Hospital.

The survey was released ahead of Monday's World Contraception Day, which was themed, "Live your life, know your rights."

Cabbie training

One hundred cabbies started training yesterday to drive the London-style taxis that were specially designed for disabled people in Hangzhou.

They learned sign language, how to move wheelchairs and how to communicate with the disabled in the half-day training session.

A service hotline 8800-9000 will be launched next month ahead of the National Paralympic Games, which the city will host from October 11.

The blue taxis with LED top lights and wheelchair logos will be on the streets soon. Hangzhou will have 50 such taxis for the disabled.

Wheelchairs can be loaded onto the taxies directly by pushing them up a slope board that extends from the taxi, while a seat belt ensures the chairs don't move during the journey.

The fare for the 50 cabs will be the same as other taxis, and the cabs look similar to the iconic London Taxi, according to an official from the Hangzhou transport authority, Wu Zhongliang.

Sightseeing tower

A UFO-shaped sightseeing tower offering "out-of-this-world experiences" beside Xixi Wetland Park is scheduled to open tomorrow.

Visitors to the tower inside the China Wetland Museum can watch movies on the only fan-shaped film screen in the nation and even lie down on a seat to better enjoy the experience.

The first movie, "Dreamlike Xixi Wetland," will be played twice daily for 28 viewers at a time.

You can also catch a good view of Xixi Wetland from the sightseeing tower - an ideal angle to appreciate China's first wetland park.

Tickets are 40 yuan (US$6.3) for adults and 20 yuan for students.

Gourmet festival

The fifth Sanjiang Gourmet Festival continues until Sunday at Xiang Lake scenic area in Xiaoshan District. Sales stands and exhibitions of fresh river food will be featured during the festival.

This year, the festival was moved to the scenic area, which is a major zone for the ongoing 2011 World Leisure Expo, to attract more visitors and promote Wenyan's food culture.

Drug mules caught

Hangzhou Customs announced that they have arrested two people for trying to smuggle heroin into China on August 22.

Customs officials said it was the biggest case of its kind in Zhejiang Province as the suspects, both Uganda citizens, had heroin weighing a total of 2,254 grams inside their bodies.

The suspects, one man and one woman, planned to deliver the heroin in China. Customs officers at Xiaoshan International Airport found the pair suspicious and stopped them for questioning. Both confessed that they were hired by overseas drug sellers to take the drugs into China.
