Creative juices flowing from concrete factory

PHOENIX Creative International, the launch project of Zhijiang Cultural Creative Town in Hangzhou Zhijiang National Tourist Holiday Resort. is one of the 10 industrial zones of culture and creation supported by the Hangzhou Municipal Government.

With an area of about 221,000 square meters, the creative town is an industrial belt of "two centers with one line," comprised of Phoenix Creative International Garden, near the Xiangshan Campus of China Academy of Fine Arts, and the reserve garden space between them.

The creative garden has been built in the 28,000-square-meter area formerly used for manufacturing and housing by the Shuangliu Concrete Factory. It still features huge chimneys, rusted steel stairs, large spaces and all kinds of signs of obsolete factory equipment.

These areas have been allocated with different creative purposes: Six lofty column buildings used for cement raw material have been adapted for creative use such as studios.

The finishing room is an avant-garde reception hall, the warehouse has been converted into a high-class art club, and two large overhaul shops became a 1,000-square-meter sound stage which is also an exhibition hall for fashion and art shows.

The "four zeros" space, consisting of four huge cement barrels, is a platform for international art exhibitions, which will be presented in collaboration with the Berlin University of Arts.

The university will arrange for intermittent exhibitions and lectures by German teachers and students.

Located in a supreme holiday destination area, the creative garden lies comfortably with the confluence of mountain, water, big trees and fresh air.

Its rustic, creative feeling comes the obsolete workshop environment and mottled walls with the creative factory slogans from two or three decades ago.

Being close to the Xiangshan Campus of China Academy of Fine Arts, students are welcome not only to visit but also to create.

Since the area was partly open to the public last year, 45 enterprises have been selected to settle in, including big names like Tsai Chih Chung Cartoon Studio and the Hesign International from Germany, as well as 19 enterprise teams consisting of teachers and students from China Academy of Fine Arts.

This month, the garden is holding a "Phoenix Creative International Week" which includes a series of free art shows.
