Creative minds meet, sparks fly

HANGZHOU'S Cultural and Creative Industry Expo is underway and the city itself is abuzz with all kinds of innovative ideas.

The theme is "Creative City, Creative Life" and the aim is to build Hangzhou into a national cultural and creative industry center that attracts talent from around the world.

The expo, which opened Thursday, is being held through Monday at the Hangzhou Peace International Convention and Exhibition Center.

The event is hosted by the Hangzhou government, the China Academy of Art and Zhejiang University and is one of the most important aspects of this year's West Lake International Expo.

Around 300,000 people, including 80,000 industry experts, are expected at the expo, which invited 500 exhibitors.

Forums will be held throughout the event.

Hangzhou wants to project itself as a brand and uses the slogan "Design by Hangzhou."

The expo features four exhibition halls: City Innovation, Cultural Heritage, International Innovation and Design Innovation.

In the City Innovation Hall, various districts and counties showcase their culture and creative industries.

An IMAX film about new media shows the city's achievements, advantages and development goal for the industry. The exhibition industry itself is showcased in the promotion of the 2011 World Leisure Expo in Hangzhou.

In the Cultural Heritage Hall, intangible cultural heritage in art, music and crafts from Zhejiang Province is featured, demonstrating the long history behind cultural innovation.

Hangzhou is well-known for its seal carving culture, which combines sculpture, calligraphy and other arts.

The International Innovation

Hall displays works from the UK, Italy, Japan, South Korea and other countries. It aims to encourage international exchanges and cooperation.

In the Design Innovation Hall, creative designs from individuals, organizations, enterprises and universities are showcased, as well as their practical applications.

The Campus Design section features works from students of the China Academy of Art, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou Normal University, Zhejiang University of Technology and the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology.

The Industrial Design section features works from the 2010 German iF Product Design Award and 2010 Creative Hangzhou Industrial Design Award. This is where local designers and international designers exchange ideas.

At the square outside the main exhibition area, the West Lake Innovation Market features works by designers, college students and teams.

There are music performances, a show of socialist realism art and a competition in low-carbon art installation.

The big expo extends to three of the city's innovation parks - Zhijiang Cultural Innovation Park, Canal World Cultural Innovation Park and Tianyi Home Furnishing Cultural Innovation Park.

Meanwhile, Hangzhou's Creative Life Festival is in full swing throughout the city through Wednesday. It aims to make creative thinking, design and products part of everyday life. Ten creative activities include World eSports Masters Hangzhou, a youth digital movie award, a creative home designer award and a youth intelligent robot creative competition.

Forty cultural and creative experience spots have been set up throughout the city.
