Cultural festival
THE Southern Song Royal Street International Tourism Culture Art Festival begins today. The festival will continue until September 24.
The festival, aimed at letting tourists experience Chinese history and culture, is an important part of the West Lake International Expo.
Activities will take place at Qing He Fang Historical Block, Southern Song Royal Street and Wushan Square.
As the name of the festival suggests, the week's lineup will include a lot of events inspired by the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279).
These include operas and acrobatics, a food culture week, a native produce sales exhibition, a handicrafts exhibition at Southern Song Royal Street, a cultural exhibition and a cricket contest.
Lithium battery
A new type of lithium battery is now being used in buses on six routes in Hangzhou.
The life of the battery is above four years. It owns over 100 patented technologies and can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 50 percent.
Lithium batteries can also be used in railway transportation, solar energy, construction machinery?and more.
Night sky bursts
The opening ceremony of the West Lake International Expo and the International Fireworks Show will be held on October 16.
The ceremony will run from 7:40pm to 8:40pm. Main venues will include City Balcony Region, Canal Culture Square and Lishui Road in Qianjiang New Town.
There will be designated places along Qiantang River for residents to watch the show.
"The combination of these two shows means more people, and congestion will be a big problem," Police Commissioner Ke Liangdong said. He advised people planning on attending to be more aware of safety.
Black 'n white stripes
THe Zebra Music Festival will be held from 9am to 11pm on October 2-3 at the Phoenix International Garden.
Guests include singers Wang Feng, Zhang Chu, Zhang Zhenyue, Zhang Xuan, Wang Xiaokun. The German band Puppet Mastaz will also perform.
Osmanthus blooms
A SERIES of tourism activities, including trips to Hangzhou to see sweet osmanthus, or guihua in Chinese, were kicked off in Shanghai yesterday.
Shanghai, Hangzhou and Nantong in Jiangsu Province are trying to improve resources sharing to boost travel between cities in?the Yangtze River Delta.
During the activity, Hangzhou will provide tourists with special products, including pamphlets, about sweet osmanthus shrubs and trees.
The pamphlets are in both English and Chinese and will include information about products such as osmanthus wine and osmanthus cakes.
Sweet osmanthus is the city flower of Hangzhou.
Measles vaccine
Children who were born between October 1, 2005, and December 31, 2009, are required to receive a supplementary measles vaccine.
Preliminary?statistics show that 350,000 children in Hangzhou need the vaccine. About 37,550 children were immunized on the first day.
The supplementary immunization offers another chance for residents to reseed the measles vaccine, especially children who did not finish the previous immunization. The vaccine can also prevent mumps, according to experts.
Children who are ill or have any contraindications can choose not to inoculate or get the measles shot at a later date.
Contest for sailors
The first seaman skill competition is held today in Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province. The competition is designed to improve technical training for sailors in Zhejiang.
According to a recent survey, there were 46 accidents along the coast of Zhejiang Province between January and August this year.
The accidents caused 57 deaths and 80 million yuan (US$11.89 million) in economic losses.
To reduce the number of accidents, Zhejiang decided to hold the competition to improve the quality of seamen.
The two-day competition includes 18 teams from Hangzhou, Ningbo, Zhoushan and Wenzhou.
