Cultural park

Hangzhou will convert a deserted quarry into a cultural and creative park, officials said last week. The quarry, named Phoenix Valley, is in the city’s Zhijiang area and will house the Xiangshan campus of the China Academy of Art and Phoenix International, the developer.

The quarry site is 40 hectares in size.

According to the Hangzhou Urban Planning Bureau, hillsides will be reinforced to prevent landslides and greenery will be planted in the valley. Phoenix International has already turned a cement factory there into a creative hub for fashion designers, comics and animators, and media firms. Famous Taiwan cartoonist Tsai Chih Chung has opened a studio there.

The valley will also have a college and a vocational school. The planned Metro Line 6 will have a station about 700 meters from the valley, urban planning officials said.
