Degree of sophistication on education street

The name Jiaogong Road suggests that the road has links with education. Jiaogong literally means "faculty of a school."

The road, which connects Tianmushan Road in the south and Moganshan Road in the north, is indeed home to higher education institutions - including Zhejiang University and Zhejiang Gongshang University - together with technical and vocational schools.

And at the intersection of Tianmushan and Jiaogong roads is the EAC Office Building, housing world-famous international enterprises.

Every day, students laden with bags and books bring an academic air to the bustling road, while the white-collar workers hurrying to their offices add a business rhythm.

A highlight of Jiaogong Road is Xiaobaihua Park, named after the noted Zhejiang Xiaobaihua Yueju Opera Troupe.

The park is located opposite the troupe, and takes its theme from Yueju Opera. There is a statue of a Yueju actor dancing with an actress with traditional Chinese fans, while behind them are six panels featuring classic scenes of Yueju Opera ---- such as "Lu You and Tang Wan," "Romance of the Western Chamber" and "Celebrating Mother's Birthday."

Shanghai Daily took a stroll along Jiaogong Road recently, engaging in a spot of loafing in a couple of cafes, dipping a toe into the sea of knowledge in a bookstore, and after all these exertions, chowing down at a restaurant.

Cats cafe

Many customers come to this cafe to see the three cats that live here. Residents for many years, the felines are accustomed to an endless stream of visitors, so they are quite hospitable.

Most of the time, they lie at the doorway snoozing away, seemingly oblivious to the hubbub around them.

A message on a small blackboard says feeding the cats is forbidden.

The cafe is situated near Zhejiang Gongshang University. Students are regulars here. With WiFi and free board games, students can sip a leisure coffee while surfing the Internet or taking on friends in games.

And as a further inducement to students, Cats Cafe offers a 12 percent discount to customers holding a student's identity card. Takeaway is available at a 20 percent discount.

Xiaofeng Bookstore

This branch of the famous Xiaofeng Bookstore is located near the Zhejiang Gongshang University Press. Porcelains, exquisite notebooks and postcards, stationery and plants help create a pleasant environment.

Best-sellers, exam materials and academic textbooks attract students and other customers. Browsing here is a good way to while away an afternoon.

POST Yihui Restaurant

This restaurant is located on the second floor of the EAC Office Building, providing an ideal place for white-collar workers to meet with friends after work.

The minimalist decor features a wall made from empty wine bottles, dividing different zones of the restaurant.

Blue-and-white porcelain bowls and plates add a traditional Chinese touch to the overall atmosphere.

On the menu are Hangzhou dishes, Cantonese dishes, plus newly created options.

A signature dish is kung fu soup - containing pork chops, king trumpet mushrooms and herbs. It is served in a ceramic tea pot. Customers pour the delicate soup into a small teacup and sip slowly before tackling the meat and mushrooms.

Other recommended dishes include black pepper lamb chops, pickled vegetables braised with duck meat and deep-fried dough sticks stewed with shrimps.

On the drinks menu, Love of Summer is very popular with customers. Lime slices and mint leaves are soaked in water containing tiny pieces of ice. Zesty and icy, it brings much-welcomed cool on hot summer days.

CC Coffee Club

Unlike most cafes on this busy street, CC is hidden away in a neighborhood and has an anonymous exterior. In fact, unless you enlist local help, you may struggle to find it.

But its low-profile location has helped the cafe thrive for more than five years. It attracts nearby office staff by virtue of its comparatively tranquil environment, offering temporary respite from work pressures.

Adding to the peaceful vibe, CC has a terrace where flowers sprawl over pipes.

The cafe decor shows a delicate, imaginative touch, featuring displays of knickknacks in wall units and bead curtains dividing booths.
