Dirty pool water

LOCAL hygiene and sanitation inspectors found 21 of the city’s 282 public swimming pools failed to meet water quality standards.

Pool operators were ordered to fix problems immediately to ensure the health of swimmers.

Inspectors collected 960 water samples from the 282 public pools, with 40 samples from 21 pools failing the test. The main problems included improper use of chlorine and excessive bacteria levels.

According to the national standard, the chlorine level should be around 0.4 milligrams to 0.6mg per liter, compared with the International Swimming Federation’s standard of 0.2mg per liter. China allows more chlorine in pools because they usually have more swimmers.

Hangzhou classifies public swimming pools into three hygiene levels from A to C. People are advised to use the Level A swimming pools. The level sign can be found at the entrance of each swimming pool.
