Discover the magic and romance of Kunqu Opera

ZHEJIANG Kunqu Opera Troupe is presenting a sequence of Kunqu Opera plays this week featuring performers all aged under 35.

The season opened at Shengli Theater on Sunday and runs until this Saturday.

Kunqu Opera boasts a 600-year history as one of the oldest existing forms of traditional Chinese opera. It became well-known since the opening ceremony of 2008 Beijing Olympic Games showed a short elegant and refined piece of Kunqu Opera performed by Zeng Jie from Zhejiang Kunqu Opera Troupe.

He stars in the Act I and II of "The Peony Pavilion," China's best-loved classical opera written in the Ming Dynasty (1364-1644), respectively last night and tonight.

Another outstanding play, "Xiyuanji," will be presented tomorrow night.

It tells the story of the West Garden and is a romance set in the famous Xixi Wetlands of Hangzhou.

A lavish special performance of beloved opera highlights will finish the week-long show on Saturday, featuring combat scenes, dancing, poetry and singing.
