Drawing the cartoonindustry to Hangzhou
HOSTING the China International Cartoon & Animation Festival is just part of Hangzhou's efforts in recent years to achieve the title of China's capital of the cartoon and animation industry.
Over the past year, the animation industry in Hangzhou has been booming: China's first animation-themed theater opened to the public in the city; animations produced in Hangzhou were selected for the fourth time to screen at the Cannes TV Festival and received wide attention; and earlier this year, Hangzhou collaborated with China Central Television to present the first-ever animated Spring Festival gala.
And, if all that were not enough, 22 major roads of the city have been decorated with cute cartoon character images.
Hangzhou government has strongly supported the animation industry, last year allocating 70 million yuan (US$ 11.1 million) to support original animation projects. The city is also making preparation for the construction of the Comic and Animation Museum. The museum, designed by Dutch architecture practice MVRDV, will consist of cartoon-bubble-shaped halls and an IMAX theater.
Not surprisingly, in view of this encouragement and the city's rich cultural heritage, more and more comic book and animation enterprises and professionals are deciding to open offices in Hangzhou.
Last year, noted Hong Kong cartoonist Tony Wong Yuk-Long chose Hangzhou to present his first comics exhibition in the Chinese mainland. His animation company was also launched in the city.
