Driver appeals ruling

A TRUCK driver from Anhui Province has asked Gongshu District People’s Court to overturn a Hangzhou traffic police decision that partly blames him in the death of Zhejiang University vice president Wu Ping after a crash accident last June.

Surveillance video footage showed Wu was driving an Audi sedan on Raocheng Expressway and crashed into the truck being driven by Wang Guocai as he tried to cut in front to get to the exit ramp first. Wu died in the crash.

Traffic police determined Wu was the main culprit in the accident but also said Wang was partly responsible because his truck failed a braking test and was 32.34 percent overloaded. As a result, Wang was fined 2,200 yuan (US$361) and had six points deducted from his record.

“Even though my truck was overloaded and the brake was not working well, I had no responsibility for the accident because it was caused by his sudden lane change,” Wang said. “I know my truck was not 32 percent over the weight limit and I wasn’t even at the scene when the police weighed it.”

Gongshu District People’s Court accepted the case but a hearing date has not yet been set.
