Eating too much salt

NEARLY 90 percent of Hangzhou residents consume 10.59 grams of salt a day on average, more than recommended by the World Health Organization, local health officials said last week after releasing the results of a diet survey.

The survey found urban residents eat 9.83 grams of salt a day on average while rural residents ingest 11.07 grams, far exceeding the 6 grams recommended by the WHO.

About 65 percent of Hangzhou residents also consume more edible oil than the recommended maximum of 30 grams a day, with urban dwellers consuming 33.61 grams and rural folks 41.25 grams.

The officials said their six-day survey covered 1,533 residents in the city.

Excess intake of sodium chloride is associated with cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure and other chronic diseases, they said.
