Free HIV tests

Hangzhou residents can now get free HIV/AIDS tests that take only 40 minutes to complete, the health bureau announced yesterday.

The bureau has set up test centers in Jianggan, Xiacheng, Xihu and Shangcheng districts.

Authorities selected two public bath houses in Jianggan District, a known meeting place for homosexual men, to conduct a test run last November. Since then 87 people had undergone the tests and 10 tested positive.

With the quick testing technology, staff members can provide on-site counseling to those with AIDS immediately to avoid delays. The original test took seven days to complete.

Residents can apply for the free service with a valid ID card. The centers will maintain strict privacy for all test takers.
