Economy on target
THE Hangzhou People's Congress convened its annual session at the Zhejiang Great Hall of the People on Monday.
Hangzhou Mayor Shao Zhanwei delivered a government work report at the meeting, reviewing work from the past year and outlining targets for 2012. He also elaborated on the city's 12th Five-Year (2011-2015) Plan and stressed the role of government as a service provider.
From 2006 to 2011, Hangzhou's gross domestic product rose 11.5 percent annually on average to 701 billion yuan (US$111 billion) and fiscal revenue jumped 19 percent annually.
Hangzhou's GDP is expected to reach 1 trillion yuan by 2015, one year ahead of the previous estimate. GDP will reach 1.3 trillion yuan in 2016, according to the government blueprint.
The city plans to add 850,000 jobs in the next five years with the unemployment rate for urban dwellers remaining under 4 percent. Basic pension insurance and medical insurance programs will cover over 97 percent of permanent residents.
Life expectancy will reach 81 years with population growth of below 5 percent by the end of the 2016.
For 2012, GDP is expected to rise around 10 percent, fixed assets around 14 percent, imports and exports at 12 percent and retail sales at 18 percent. The city plans to add 180,000 new jobs.
Friendship deal
HANGZHOU and Hamamatsu of Shizuoka Prefecture in Japan signed a friendship city agreement at Hamanako Lake on April 6.
Both sides will take part in exchanges in the fields of economics, travel, culture, science, technology and education, according to the agreement.
Hamamatsu is an industrial city best known for manufacturing musical instruments and motorcycles.
The friendship agreement between Hangzhou and Hamamatsu is part of a celebration to mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of friendly relations between Zhejiang Province and Shizuoka Prefecture.
It also coincides with the 40th anniversary of the normalization of Sino-Japanese ties.
Wine confiscated
The Hangzhou industrial and commercial administration department recently intercepted nearly 10,000 bottles of problematic red wine worth more than 3 million yuan.
The 9,398 bottles of red wine were found at shopping malls, supermarkets, wine shops and wholesale markets around the city.
The problems included: no Chinese labels, the wrong addresses of sales agents, no quality certificates and fake trademarks.
It has been reported that Chateau Lafite Rothschild, a first growth Bordeaux wine from France that is among the most expensive wines in the world, only exports around 50,000 bottles of red wine to China annually.
However, China was found to have consumed 2 million bottles of Lafite last year, thus most of it is not genuine.
Flower power
The Hangzhou Xixi Flower Festival will open at Xixi Wetland Park on Tuesday. Visitors can see many colorful blossoms and watch some folk art performances.
It's the second straight year the wetland park has hosted a flower festival.
This year's highlight is two ancient plants - a 450-year-old azalea with as many as 100,000 flowers, and a peony shrub that is about 1,000 years old.
The festival ends on May 20.
Metro Line 1 trial
Trial use of Metro Line 1 will begin by the end of September. The Metro gateways are beginning to take shape at Zhalongkou Station at the junction of Tiancheng Road and Jichang Road.
Station entrances will be made of glass and steal, according to Hangzhou Metro Group. The China Academy of Art will design line drawings on the surface of the entrances.
Hangzhou Metro Group said the design should be eye-catching and easy to recognize in a unified style while fitting in with the surroundings.
A marker will be established beside an entrance to show passengers whether they can find a toilet downstairs in the station.
Station halls will be installed with elevators for the disabled.
Construction has finished on the major structure of all Line 1 stations. Test runs are expected to begin in June.
