Education and fun in the great outdoors

NOW is the time to get outdoors, especially if the air pollution isn’t too bad, and you have children to entertain.

The warmer weather and blooming flowers encourage parents to take their children to try everything from field survival training to picking fruit or planting trees and having fun in parks.

Shanghai Daily recommends three popular theme parks. Put aside your work and take your family on a nice outing.

Haihuangxing Ecological Park

The park is situated at the intersection of the Qiantang River and Fuchun River and adjoins Zhijiang National Tourism Area. It covers an area of 500,000 square meters and cost 190 million yuan (US$30 million).

Being one of the largest multi-functional ecological parks in southeast China, Haihuangxing is becoming more popular, especially in spring when visitors can walk along a 1.9-kilometer path flanked by cherry trees.

The park is divided into eight parts, including the fancy carp, fishing, food and field survival training zones.

Fancy carp symbolizes fortune and good luck in China. The park carved out 200,000 square meters to raise fancy carp on fish farms. Parents can bring their children here to learn more about the animal.

The field survival zone contains various outdoor activities and coaches teach kids how to make a fire, get water and give first-aid treatment in the wild.

The food zone is big enough for more than 2,000 people, providing freshly caught fish from neighboring rivers, local poultry and wild vegetables cooked in either a Cantonese or Hangzhou style.

If visitors want something different they can have an outdoor barbecue in the picnic zone.

After tasting the savory food visitors can take a nap in hammocks. Thirteen organic strawberry patches offer a chance to pick the tasty fruit.

Hongboyuan National Defense Education Base

The so-called national defense education base is a military themed park featuring activities designed to boost cooperation, persistence and protect nature.

The base is located in Ningwei Town in Xiaoshan District with an area of 70,000 square meters. As Zhejiang Province’s only national defense base with military training open to the public, Hongboyuan is the first choice when schools want to organize collective training.

The military training is expected to cultivate a strong character and patriotism as they have to go through a series of tough exercises. They also have fire drills so children know how to save themselves in an emergency.

Planting trees is another activity recommended for parents and children since it raises the importance of protecting the environment.

Picking vegetables lets children experience where food comes from. All of the vegetables grown at the base are planted by Zhejiang University using high-tech cultivation techniques.

Farmer’s Park

This park provides a wide range of performances and entertainment facilities.

Previously a state-owned farm, the 180,000-square-meter park opened in 2008 at a cost of 150 million yuan. It attracts about 3,000 visitors a day. Parents are also glad to take children here since they consider it an introduction to how food goes from farm to table.

One stage drama tells a story of man-like vegetables and animals. However, children become overwhelmed with excitement when they see the village based on the popular cartoon “Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf.” Role-playing games allow kids to use their imaginations and have a great time.

In the past four years, the park has been designated as a sub锛峷enue of the China International Cartoon and Animation Festival. It won the Best Parallel Session award for its carnival and park decoration.
