Exhibit showcases Fujian artists, calligraphers
WORKS of 24 modern master calligraphers and painters from Fujian Province are on exhibit at the Zhejiang Art Museum through next Sunday.
The touring exhibition of around 200 works, all by well-known artists, "showcases Fujian's cultural power," according to the organizing committee. Works include calligraphy, Chinese ink-wash painting, watercolor painting and lacquer painting, which is unique to the province in southeast China.
The best known artists are calligrapher Chen Fenwu and painter Tan Dongkeng, both displaying their recent works.
Lacquer painting was derived from lacquer ware decoration, which is common in China, Japan and Vietnam.
"China's lacquer painting developed in the 1980s, and initially it was decorative and ornamental, but today artists transfer their ideas into their works," says Chen Lide, a lacquer painter from Fujian.
The province, one of the origins of lacquer ware, developed its own style due to its coastal location and works include not only lacquer, but also shells, pebbles, fish scales and other natural materials.
The color of lacquer painting is generally rich and strong, always with a dark-red color, which is the natural color of lacquer from trees that grow in the region. Works can be very smooth, or texture.
Works of international spirit are seen as well.
He Weiming, an internationally recognized artist, displays two wall-sized works in tones of gray, depicting young women standing in mountains and in buildings. He has won the Excellent International Artist Award from the Association Internationale Sinoccygen. He also won first prize in the Europe China International Paper Art Contest.
"The paintings are not in Fujian-style, but I believe nowadays that both art and artists should be international," says He. His art is known for its links with nature and spirituality.
Traditional Fujian paintings are also exhibited, including many traditional bird-and-flower works.
After the exhibition in Hangzhou, the 24 artists will go to other Chinese cities, including Fuzhou, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Ji'nan.
Date: Through July 28 (closed on Mondays)
