Exhibition featuring artists from former Soviet Union
Though the Soviet Union no longer exists, its mark can be seen in art created during that time, which has risen in collection value.
An exhibition, Former Soviet Union Period Artworks, is underway at Qiantang Bay Art Museum, which is showing more than 100 pieces made by former Soviet Union artists using such themes as the October Revolution and the Soviet Union’s Great Patriotic War (1941-1945) against Nazi Germany.
Oil paintings with a strong Russian flavor as well as realistic sculptures are displayed in the three-story museum. Many paintings are “seen as the record of important moments of the former Soviet Union,” said Chen Yali, the owner of the museum.
There are oil paintings depicting Vladimir Lenin visiting Finland, soldiers and young people occupying the czar’s Winter Palace, and workers constructing a hydropower station.
A highlight is a group of sketches for “Rest after the battle. Vasily Terkin” done by Yuri Neprintsev before the finished oil painting was done. “Rest after Battle” is one of the signature works of representatives of the Leningrad School of Painting famous for battle paintings.
The original version of the painting “Rest after the battle. Vasily Terkin” (1951) was a gift for Mao Zedong. In 1953, the second version was painted by Yuri Neprintsev for the Kremlin. In 1955, he painted the third version for the Tretyakov Gallery.
Many of the exhibits are from private collectors. The exhibition is free of charge.
