Exhibition takes broad brush to collecting art
SOME people think art exhibitions are all about high-price exhibits and not-for-sale collections. But, of course, that's not the case as many exhibitions featuring more affordable works also exist, attracting many art lovers.
The Nine Cities Exhibition falls into this category. Organized by nine newspapers in nine provinces, having toured cities in eight other provinces, it is scheduled to arrive in Hangzhou in September.
But for now there is a preview of the event in Kuai Yi Kong Jian through July 9.
With exhibits priced at around 10,000 yuan (US$1,572), organizers believe the exhibition will appeal to art lovers, and offers works from various geographical areas.
This preview includes 60 works by 19 Hangzhou local artists, covering oil painting, traditional ink painting, woodcut painting and calligraphy. And the themes vary from beautiful birds, fantastic mountains and remote villages to the modern metropolis.
Nine Cities Exhibition aims at picking paintings from young and middle-aged artists whose works have more potential return.
Chen Lan's lotus paintings have attracted lots of visitors on the tour, and are a highlight of the preview.
In Wuhan, Hubei Province, her gorgeously colored works quickly sold out, and the sponsor had to supplement her works.
In Hangzhou, six of Chen's works are on display, including a new series, "Zi Zai Lian Lian."
In an auction this spring, her "Lian" series sold for 126,500 yuan. Such a high auction price adds to the value of her other works.
"Although young artists haven't been wildly popular, their works are affordable for ordinary people and have more scope for appreciating in value," said Wang Rongjuan, a curator of Nine Cities Exhibition.
The preview also features interactive activities between visitors and artists, with brushes, paint, canvas, clay and other materials provided.
Painter Zhang Yi divided a 1-square-meter canvas into several spaces in which people could paint whatever they want.
"It is like a colored collision of moods. Every one draws at will. No one knows what surprise it could be when different colors mix together. Populist art is just like this - to bring joy to people," Zhang said.
Sculptor Zhang Yuxi, working with polymer clay, was rapidly surrounded by children. After a few seconds of rubbing, pinching and shaping, as if by magic, a lump of clay was transformed into a cartoon character.
He said that playing with clay was an exercise in liberating creativity.
"It's interesting to pinch different shapes according to your mood," explained Zhang.
In addition to these activities, people can take their own painting and calligraphy there to ask for artists' professional guidance.
