Expats make DIY postcards to tell about charm of city

Scan a QR code, add the account on WeChat, send a photo, enter a key, and get it printed. In one minute, a digital photo in a smartphone is turned into a real postcard. Also, sending them, to no matter how far, is free.

At Hangzhou International Information Exchange Center yesterday, a dozen expats living in Hangzhou participated in the “Discover the Charm of Hangzhou — DIY Postcard Activity.”

“I think it’s a great initiative for the city to organize an event like this, and I will definitely use my time to learn more about this activity and the city later,” says Rogier Luijnenburg, executive assistant manager in charge of food and beverage for Wyndham Grand Plaza Royale Hangzhou.

Besides making photos from phones and cameras into postcards, participants were encouraged to take a photo at a setting decorated with cartoon-style Hangzhou symbolic elements like temples and bridges.

Also, there were cartoon bubbles with funny characters such as “Real Man” and “I need a girlfriend.” They were prepared for participants to hold in their hands when shooting photos.

The activity is a part of the month-long 5th Hangzhou Internet Culture Festival’s opening ceremony, also held at the center and including an exhibition of Hangzhou citizens’ photos, as well as a video and photo show, “At Home, See the World.”

The show was about exotic culture and landscapes, and the videos were recorded lectures held earlier this year in the city. They were organized by the local government, which invited officials of foreign consulates in Shanghai as lecturers.

The DIY postcard activity remains online at www.hicenter.cn until January 5. Everybody is welcome to upload a photo and send a free postcard.

You can pick one of the 20 selected photos from thousands of entries in this year’s Hangzhou Citizen Photography Festival. Or, you can upload your own favorite photo to the website.

After filling in the required information, such as names, addresses and postal codes of the sender and the recipient, the Hangzhou Post Office will print your chosen photo as a postcard and send it to the designated address in China or abroad.

The annual festival aims to promote the beauty, harmony and happy life of Hangzhou and foster a healthy Internet culture.

During the month, Hangzhou citizens are being called to “market Hangzhou” by uploading their videos about Hangzhou.

The festival is co-organized by the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China’s Hangzhou Committee, the Hangzhou Information Office (the Internet Information Office) and the Hangzhou Internet Culture Association.

The Hangzhou International Information Exchange Center, also known as the HiCenter, was established in 2010 as a nonprofit institution devoted to promoting the city of Hangzhou to foreigners.
