‘Experimental Field’ lets imagination run wild

International avant-garde artists from film, opera and dance are gathering in Hangzhou this month for the “Experimental Field” event at Zhejiang Art Museum.
The third “Experimental Field” runs through September 29 and is a public free cultural activity sponsored by Zhejiang Art Museum to help introduce contemporary art to citizens.
The event started last weekend with a screening of the movie “Apart Together” and a lecture by Hong Kong Pai Yeo Theater.
The movie “Apart Together,” directed by Wang Quan’an, follows an old Kuomintang soldier who returns to the Chinese mainland from Taiwan after 50 years to find his first love.
“Apart Together” opened the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival and won the Best Screenplay award at the festival.
This Saturday, experimental opera “Contract Termination,” directed by Chinese director and installation artist He Bing will be shown at 2pm at Zhejiang Art Museum. It tells real stories that have occurred in orphanages and old people’s homes.
On September 14, Spanish contemporary dancer Toni Jodar is to give his signature program “Modern Dance Speaks” at the museum at 3pm. Jodar will explain the history of dance through the medium of dance itself, using a combination of performance and video clips.
Audiences will be shown the evolution of the art form from classical to contemporary as Jodar explains the different genres and forms that the body uses to express itself in movement.
And at 3pm on September 28 and 29, the experimental opera “Let’s Pretend to be Human,” by Swiss theater director and performer Marcel Schwald is to analyze “what is helping and why do people help,” also at the museum. Following the opera is a forum given by the director and actors.
