Expressway system

AN expressway network covering downtown will be completed by the end of 2015, Executive Vice Mayor Yang Xubiao said in an interview with netizens last week.

The network includes eight urban expressways: five are east-west routes - Desheng, Liushi, Jiangnan, Caihong and Tianmu - and three are north-south routes - Donghu, Qiushi and Shangtang.

In addition, Hangzhou plans to prioritize public transport development and set up more exclusive lanes for public buses. To make sure the lanes are used by public buses, all newly built roads must have six lanes while old roads will be changed into six-lane roads when possible.

In order to ease parking space shortages, Hangzhou has introduced regulations requiring that all newly constructed schools build underground public parking lots under playgrounds. More parking lots are encouraged to be set up under parks, squares, public transport hubs and cultural and sports facilities.

By year's end, Hangzhou will add 48,000 parking spaces.
