Fare stalemate
A hearing on fares for the Hangzhou Metro Line 1 was held last week, with two options discussed. However, neither was accepted by representatives attending.
One plan would set the starting fare at 2 yuan (32 US cents) for the first 4 kilometers, with the maximum price for a full 48-kilometer trip capped at 10 yuan.
A second option proposes a base fare of 3 yuan for the first 6 kilometers, with the maximum for a full trip at 9 yuan.
Students, children under 1.3 meters in height and disabled people would be given discounts.
Though Hangzhou is a second-tier city, fares under both plans are equal to or higher than fares in first-tier cities, including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou in Guangdong Province.
The hearing drew 22 people from different walks of life and governmental departments to hear the options on offer.
Professor Wang Chuanwei from Zhejiang Gonshang University suggested lowering the fare to encourage more commuters. "It would be worthwhile if a 5 percent reduction could attract 10 percent more passengers," he said.
