Festive hotel fare for all tastes
IT'S a Christmas cultural feast this season in Hangzhou with the city's top hotels pulling out all stops to spread fine food for all tastes, including a Brazilian barbeque, Chinese buffet and a European spread with Italian Christmas cake. Tan Weiyun reports. Juicy and tender turkey, flickering Christmas tree lights, happy family reunions and Santa Claus - the Christmas bells are ringing louder.
With the holiday season in full swing, hotels in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, are all set for this year's fierce market-grabbing festive battle, offering many promotions for the holiday period.
Conveniently situated in the Huanglong commercial circle and tuned to both corporate and leisure markets, Oakwood Residence Hangzhou offers a Christmas Eve buffet dinner, prepared by chef Jonathan, on December 24.
The dinner costs 388 yuan (US$57.10) plus 15 percent service charge per head, including the special promotion of "buy two, get 100 yuan value cash coupon at Oakleaf Restaurant."
"Different from a normal hotel, Oakwood doesn't have a big restaurant and this Christmas Eve buffet dinner is the first official Christmas event since opening," says General Manager Malcolm Hines.
"We will try to create a special, exquisite and warm Christmas Eve," he says.
In addition, the serviced apartment hotel offers a Christmas package of 1,288 yuan, including two Christmas buffet dinners, one night stay in a one-bedroom suite with two buffet breakfasts the next day. And the special promotion with the package is "buy two, get 200 yuan value cash coupon" at Oakleaf.
Near the junction of Qiantang, Fuchun and Puyang rivers, Sofitel Hangzhou Xanadu Resort will feature during the holiday a Brazilian-style Christmas.
Its restaurant will present a Barbeque party, specially prepared by the Brazilian chef Junior Dos Reis who has been in China for more than 10 years and speaks fluent Chinese.
"We'll also have a rich variety of cocktails for our guests to go with different meat," says the chef. "Many people are familiar with a traditional Christmas party, but we want to show a hotter South American one this year. And don't worry, you won't miss the traditional turkey."
In addition, a Philippine rock band will highlight the party to heat up the atmosphere. The Brazilian party costs 488 yuan per person, plus 15 percent service charge.
In the hotel's ballroom, there will also be a Christmas Carnival buffet. Unlike the BBQ party, the buffet is more Chinese. Many traditional folk art performances will be on display, including the mask-changing in Sichuan Opera, paper-cutting from Shanxi Province and shadow play from Shaanxi Province.
In addition, lucky draw prizes include return air tickets to Hong Kong and tickets to the Hangzhou concert in January of French pianist Richard Clayderman.
The Hyatt Regency Hangzhou this year will celebrate the festive season with fine food and wine, carols, gifts and Christmas spirit in its restaurants, bars and ballrooms.
The highlight Christmas Eve party (1,988 yuan) in the grand ballroom will include a gala dinner, performances and lucky draws to enrich guests' festive spirit.
It will also provide a sumptuous Christmas buffet in the cafe, including Christmas Eve champagne brunch (398 yuan), Christmas Eve Brunch (268 yuan) and Christmas Eve dinner (998 yuan). They are all subject to 15 percent service charge.
What's more, the Hyatt Christmas boutique offers an extensive selection of Christmas gift ideas, from contemporary decorations and goodies, fine wines and exclusive traditional Christmas sweets hand-made by the chefs.
The Dragon Hotel in the city's downtown area will present typical European-style Christmas fare this year.
A Christmas dinner (1,288 yuan) in the Italian restaurant, Veranda, will feature scallop soup, Norwegian salmon with Italian cream cheese Mascarpone, white wine, sparkling wine, lobster cuisines, an Italian Christmas cake and many others.
It also includes lucky draws, clown performances, magic shows, live jazz and a choir.
