Film festival for budding young directors
THE second Hangzhou Student and Film Festival with the theme "Real China, Contrast Youth" opened last Friday at Zhejiang University of Technology in Hangzhou.
The festival screened more than 50 videos and films, all shot by students from Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Five videos and films were awarded.
The biggest prize, the Grand Prix Award, went to the documentary "A Day in a Life" shot by Kwok Zune from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
There were also awards for Best Documentary Film, Best Fiction Film, Best Director and Audience.
The festival is organized by the School of Humanities of Zhejiang University of Technology, Chongqing Independent Film and Video Festival and the Documentary Channel of Shanghai Media Group.
Nowadays, since the Internet is accessible to everyone and technology for shooting and editing a video is improving swiftly, making a film is no longer a distant dream, and many student directors are emerging.
However, "the lack of opportunities and platforms contributes to the fact that most students directors are underground", said Zhao Yu, the president of the festival, "and this is the reason why we organize the show."
"The festival shows that we students can also make movies." said Shan Zuolong, one of the organizers, who is a postgraduate from Tongji University.
"Plus it's a chance to tell other college students that there are more movies to watch than just Avatar - there are many excellent independent movies made with a small-budget," Shan added.
