Film week promotes French movies, language and culture
FRENCH cinema is getting popular in Hangzhou. More than a hundred fans of French cinema attended Hangzhou's 4th French Film Week and chatted, some in fluent French, with French filmmakers and actors.
Director Carine Tardieu and actress Anges Jaoui attended the screening at Starlight Cinema of "Du Vent Dans Mes Mollets" and later spoke with the audience.
The week's cinema events included screening of "L'Accordeur" ("The Piano Tuner") and the short films director Olivier Treiner and producers Thibault Gast and Matthias Weber.
Around 10 feature films were screened during the French Film Week and 10 French animated works were screened during the Hangzhou International Cartoon Festival, according to Liu Xiao, director of Tuwei Film Tribe, a film club with around 2,000 members.
The club regularly organizes screenings of French films at Chez Marie Cafe on weekends. Members range in age from teenagers to seniors older than 70.
Chen Churen, formerly the youngest member of the group, went on to enroll in the Beijing Film Academy.
"I benefited greatly from Tuwei activities; the knowledge I gained helped me in the academy admissions interview as well as my studies," he says.
The club screens around five films a week free of charge, including at least one French film.
Wang Chenchen, a former tribesman, went on to study film in France. At least six members have gone overseas for further studies.
The oldest member is 70-year-old Shao Shufen, who attends screenings with her husband Yang Guoqiang. She once attended an event three days after undergoing cataract surgery, saying she didn't want to miss a single masterpiece.
Some members have been reviewing films for more than 10 years. They include doctoral candidates in ancient Greek philosophy, classical literature and aesthetics.
At least 20 film fans have fallen in love, and now they attend activities as couples.
The French Film Week has helped expand appreciation for French culture in Hangzhou and film fans from around China as well as foreign visitors often sign up for film tribe activities.
Since the French Film Week began in 2009, many high-quality original French films were screened and many French directors and producers visited Hangzhou to communicate with the audience.
Last year Alliance Francaise held 75 activities including film screenings, lectures, exhibitions and concerts in Hangzhou that attracted around 6,200 local participants.
The film week this year was co-organized by theAlliance Francaise and Starlights Cinemas in Hangzhou. It is supported by the Consulate General of France in Shanghai and Chifran Cultural Agency.
Christine Malard-Pene has been director of Alliance Francaise of Hangzhou since September. She was sent to Hangzhou to promote cultural collaboration and education in French language and culture.
Mailard-Pene previously worked with the French Foreign Ministry, dealing with cultural affairs in West Africa and some southeastern cities in France.
