Fire in oldest tree

The longest surviving tree in downtown Hangzhou, about 1,012 years old, caught fire last week due to ignition of excrement from bats living in big tree holes, according to a preliminary investigation.

The ancient gingko tree near Huancheng Road E. began to burn on the night of November 20, and firefighters extinguished the fire in about 20 minutes.

The fire burned only the rotten parts of holes in the trunk, however, and the tree’s bark was unscathed. Experts said the tree would not die due to the fire.

Firefighters had to climb scaffolds around the gingko tree to extinguish the fire since the holes are about 10 meters high. The scaffolds were used by workers to clean and seal the holes to prevent further decay.

A thorough examination of the tree’s condition will be carried out by botanists in the near future.
