Fire safety reviewed
THE fatal apartment block fire in Shanghai earlier this week alerted the Hangzhou government to the hidden dangers existing in high-rise towers.
As a result, the Hangzhou fire department have started to check potential fire risks in high-rises in recent days. The checks focused on areas such as the safety risks on construction sites, the use of thermal materials for exterior walls and the parking spaces reserved for fire engines. Emergency plans were also made for each building.
Record theft solved
The biggest theft of gold ornaments in Yuhang District since the founding of China was solved by the police within six hours.
The robbery happened in Hangzhou Linping Intime Department Store on the morning of October 15. Among the stolen items were gold necklaces, earrings, bracelets and jewelry, the total value of which could reach 4 million yuan (US$602,115).
Suspect Yu and his accomplices were caught later the same day in a hotel where stolen property was found. The case is still under investigation.
Talent housing offer
Hangzhou is going to supply 2.2 million square meters of housing for talented professionals in the following three years, solving the housing problem of 21,000 professional families, 7,000 families per year.
According to government plans, the talent housing will be sold at cost price, nearly half the price of commercial houses sold in the same lots.
"There are strict rules for people who apply for talent housing," said Xu Goulian, vice director of the talent office. "We will adhere to the principle of being open, fair and just in the application procedure."
Xu also said that the average area of the house is 90 square meters, while those for high-level professionals can reach 140 square meters.
Orange fest opens
Orange picking has become a popular pastime in Hangzhou and many people attended the 2010 Qiandao Lake Orange Festival which opened on Saturday.
The festival in Jieshou Town, Chun'an County, attracted more than 500 participants over the weekend to pick oranges on a hillside overlooking the picturesque Qiandao Lake, also known as Thousand-Island Lake, and to stay in a local farmer's house.
The festival organizer also unveiled Orange Baby, the mascot of the festival which will end in early December.
Road almost ready
The road linking Hangzhou with its neighboring city of Fuyang is expected to reopen before the Chinese Lunar New Year on February 2 when its 1.3-billion-yuan renovation is completed.
A six-lane, 6.45-kilometer section of the road runs along the scenic Fuchun River and will become one of China's most beautiful boulevards. The renovated road will be equipped with advanced safety and intelligent traffic devices.
It's time to shop
The Hangzhou Recreation and Shopping Festival will begin on December 4 to give incentives to the year-end shopping spree.
Nearly 30,000 shops, department stores and shopping complexes will join the campaign and offer various promotions.
With "Energetic Hangzhou, Happy Consumption" as its theme, the festival will end on January 3, 2011.
Knife is antique
A precious iron knife found recently in Qiantang River has been confirmed as an antique from the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279).
According to Jiang Zhaoyue, president of Hangzhou Private Collector Association, iron knives of this kind were popular in the Southern Song Dynasty, but are quite rare now. This iron knife is the first and only one found in Hangzhou so far.
The discovery of the knife has a great significance. It proves the prosperity of Qiantang River area during the Southern Song Dynasty.
The knife has now been donated to the Hangzhou Archives. Residents are welcome to visit for free.
