Five great kiln museums exhibitancient works in rare joint showcase
AN unusual exhibition of ancient ceramics from five kiln museums is underway at the Southern Song Imperial Kiln Museum in Hangzhou.
The works are arranged according to function and are more than a collection of beautiful vases.
"To catalogue exhibits according to function lets everyone appreciate the beauty of ceramics and the beauty of utilitarian objects from ancient times," says Zhang Bixuan, an official of the Southern Song Imperial Kiln Museum, which is one of the five in the exhibition.
The exhibition marks the 20th anniversary of the Southern Song Imperial Kiln Museum. It is the first time kiln museums have shown works in a joint exhibition. Works are lent by the Cizhou Kiln Museum in Hebei Province, Yaozhou Kiln Museum in Shaanxi Province, Longquan Celadon Ware Museum and Cixi Museum, as well as the Southern Song Imperial Kiln Museum in Zhejiang Province.
The exhibition runs through January 20.
The event showcases almost 200 pieces of ceramics from the Song (960-1279) and Kin (1115-1234) dynasties, including more than 20 national "first level" cultural relics.
They are arranged according to rooms in a house: study, bedroom, a salon in the home of a wealthy family and the room of ordinary people.
In the scholar's study is a celadon toad-shaped yandi, a container for water added to an ink stone. It's a utilitarian work of beauty dating from the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127), lent by the Cixi Museum. The toad sits on a lotus leaf; water is dripped from the frog's mouth onto the ink stone. The toad is filled with water through a hole in its back.
From the Cizhou Kiln Museum is a jishi (an animal decoration from the ridge and eaves of a roof) in the Kin Dynasty. It's in the shape of a creature with a dragon's head and carp's body, with upturned tail and delicate scales. It was common in Buddhist temples and was used in prayers for rain.
An ancient porcelain pillow, piggy bank and urinal are also displayed.
Yaozhou Kiln's covered bowl with peony carving is from the Northern Song Dynasty; the pattern, carving and glazing are remarkable.
Carving is featured in works from the Yaozhou Kiln during the Song Dynasty when craftsman used knives and other tools to outline a pattern. The glazed, multicolored peony appears to be in freestyle, with a subtle gradation of color.
During the exhibition, five free lectures will be delivered by experts from the five ceramics museums in November and December.
